MILLER, TONEY, WRIGHT posted by John H. Wright on Friday, May 28, 1999

Carey TONEY, son of Wm. TONEY b: 1727 VA, a son named William whom lived in Dixon Twp., Preble Co., Ohio in the 1830s and 1840s. Wm. had a daughter named Rhoda b: abt. 1825. Rhoda married my g-grandfather Isaac J. WRIGHT in Preble Co. in 1842. They first had 2 children born in Preble Co., William T. WRIGHT and Malinda WRIGHT. Rhoda's mother died in 1847 and many of the TONEYs and my g-grandfather's family moved west to Richland and Crawford Counties, WI. During the trip they stopped off somewhere in IL, where Rhoda gave birth the their second son, Isaac Jesse WRIGHT in 1850. My guess is they stopped in Vermillion County IL. I have found a number of TONEYs living there in the 1850 fc. Some of the TONEY girls married Vermillion family boys. There are also a number of TONEYs listed in the 1850 Jefferson County, IL census.

The next facts I find about Isaac show him in Richland County WI widowed, not by Rhoda, but by a second wife, Sarah Catherine MILLER. In 1860 he is living alone with his 5 children. From the other children's ages, I think he must have married Sarah about 1854. Rhoda might have died giving birth to Isaac Jesse or when they first arrived in WI. I have recently visited the area and found it still rugged country. Rhoda's brother, Poindexter and other TONEYs settled in adjacent Crawford County. When Isaac joined the Union Army in 1862 little Isaac Jesse moved in with Rhoda's father Wm. (Carey's brother), then living in Crawford County WI, and stayed with him the rest of his life.A number of the above events are mentioned in the TONEY Family History book kept in the Preble County Library.

I wonder if you might know anything about what happened to Rhoda? Also, do you have any information the might help me find out whom Isaac's parents were and in what county of IN he was born. My guess is Randolph, Wayne or Union Counties, IN.

Will be pleased to share data with you.
